Streamlining applicant verification and fraud detection for King’s College London

The Challenge

During a busy intake period, King’s College London’s admissions team noticed an increase in fraudulent documentation within their international postgraduate student applications. The faked documents included transcripts, references and degree certificates.

As an internationally renowned institution where applications far exceed course spaces, it quickly became clear that King’s needed extra support with verifying high-volume applications to protect its reputation from non-genuine applicants getting through to offer stage.

The Solution

The appeal of Qualification Check’s (QC) Global Verification model was the scale at which we operate. With applicants hailing from every corner of the globe, King’s needed an established and trusted verification partner that completed checks worldwide. With a client database of over 53,000 awarding body sources in 195 countries. QC was an obvious choice.

King’s admissions department had long-established ways of working, and the new partnership with QC was rapidly introduced mid-cycle. Due to the QC platform’s user-friendly and intuitive interface, the internal training and onboarding was speedy and straightforward.

Another portal function that proved instantly beneficial was the ability to search for the institutions that accepted verification requests from QC.

This enabled the team to address applicant queries directly, some of which were concerns around whether the university they graduated from would work with us, and this could be smoothly managed via a dedicated contact email address.

I’m receiving far fewer queries from the team about fraudulent applications. It may be that they’re still finding them, but because we know we have the safety net of QC, the team are far less worried about somebody accidentally getting through to enrolment with fraudulent documents. Team QC has always been on hand to answer any questions to ensure we’re using the client platform as efficiently as we can. We’re excited to continue our collaboration with QC, including the introduction of Digital ID and English Language verification in the coming months, so our genuine students can have the best experience possible at KCL.

The Results

The King’s admission team is now fully equipped with requesting and processing degree verifications. This internal tool has given them the speed, confidence and peace of mind they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Glynnis has noticed how effectively streamlined their onboarding efforts have become, with a significant reduction in internal delays due to uncertainties around the legitimacy of applications.
